What is Digital Literacy?

The American Library Association defines Digital Literacy as:

“The ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills.”

Cornell University defines Digital Literacy as:

“The ability to find, evaluate, utilize, share, and create content using information technologies and the Internet.”

Microsoft describes Digital Literacy as:

“The effective use of devices, software, and the internet to collaborate with others and discover, use, and create information.”

Why is it important?

  • 21st century skill to participate and navigate a constantly evolving technological society
  • Ability to understand and use information from multiple sources and formats
  • Learn to become a good digital citizen
  • Build basic awareness to be informed and influence decisions
